Kier delivers water upgrade nine weeks early for West Sussex NHS Trust

Kier, a leading infrastructure services, buildings and developments & housing group have completed the upgrade of Southlands Hospital’s hot and cold domestic water system nine weeks early.

During the upgrade work, the existing water tanks and pipework have been replaced and 160 new Integrated Plumbing System (IPS) panels installed. This has created a new system that is cost effective and environmentally friendly.

The project was procured via our Minor Works framework and Kier Regional Building (Southern) continue to deliver refurbishment and upgrade works for all the Trust’s sites: St Richard’s, Southlands and Worthing hospitals, with 40 projects onsite or completed for the Trust to date.

The works were completed in phases to maintain the hospital’s daily operations and ensure that the work effect on the treatment of patients was minimised. The new water system ran parallel with the old system, enabling a consistent supply was maintained, with the original system shut down in phases after a successful changeover.

The Capital investment made to replace the water services at Southlands has been a true milestone for the Trust. These essential engineering infrastructure works have made the system capable of supporting the hospital site in the foreseeable future and ensures we are up to date with current regulations. It is always good to see changes made to the estate that continue to develop the care and service for our patients. It is always satisfying when a project is delivered ahead of time too.

As a result of the project completing early, Kier was also able to create a much-needed Changing Places facility which will provide accessible shower and changing facilities inside the hospital for both patients and the general public.
