We can man this facility with fewer staff and so it saves the taxpayer money having a facility that is state-of-the-art. It’s the most modern custody facility in the country so I am very proud that we have got it here in South Yorkshire."

Mr Crompton

Chief Constable | South Yorkshire Police

A modern, energy efficient and technologically advanced custody suite in South Yorkshire providing a safer environment for detainees and staff.

South Yorkshire Police wanted to modernise its custody area by replacing outdated suites in Sheffield and Rotherham with one 'super' suite.

This purpose-built, technologically advanced facility, secured through the National Major Works framework and delivered by Willmott Dixon, includes a 50-cell custody suite and police investigation facilities, housed alongside 11,000m2 of office space.

The new facility will allow South Yorkshire Police to safely and securely process 1,200 detainees a year and save over £1.2m a year in running costs.

One key requirement was for the new facility to be more energy efficient with a reduction in costs and CO2 emissions. By replacing inefficient custody suites with one purpose-built centre, the force are hoping to save over £1.2m a year. The building met BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards through using innovative mechanical and electrical solutions. This, along with photovoltaics, allowed a reduction in the client’s energy bills by £150,000 each year and CO2 emissions by 22%.

It also provides a safer environment for detainees, partners and staff. It promotes collaboration and more effective working practices, which affords officers more time to keep our communities safe.
