Fuelling sector growth, creating jobs and increasing visitor numbers

As part of Nottingham City Council’s growth plan, Wates were appointed to refurbish four former retail buildings in Sneinton Market, into high quality workshop and studio space.

The units were in very poor condition and had been vacant for some time. The transformative works, were designed to help realise the vision for the market to grow a lively community of businesses, artists and organisations with a focus on creative enterprises.

The project formed part of the council’s broader plans for regeneration of Nottingham’s Creative Quarter and has helped them to increase visitor numbers, create job opportunities and fuel the growth of the creative sector.

This project was part-funded by a £2.4m European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) grant, with NCC granting an additional £1.45m. In turn, the new space is now fit-for-purpose and available for commercial letting at an affordable price.

As there were businesses actively trading in the market, the project needed careful planning to make sure the sequencing and phasing of the works allowed minimum disruption and maintained safe and unhindered access to Pretty Windows Day Nursery.

The fit out and delivery of services and metering in each unit allows the highest level of flexibility to attract the widest range of artisan/craft businesses, along with the installation of a new Point of Sales unit creating a sales focal point, helping to improve the promotion of units to let.

In addition to work carried out on site, Wates made a donation to Pretty Windows Day Nursery located on site and staff volunteered at their community day.

I passed on our personal thanks to all the team on site, not only for turning this around promptly and expertly, but also for creating an extraordinary monument that will serve the people of Nottinghamshire proud.I would also like to take this opportunity to pass on our thanks to everyone who has worked hard behind the scenes to make this happen. It been a long journey, quite challenging in places, but we would not have done this without the hard work dedication and skill of everyone involved.”
